Nachman and His Relationship with Ali Massid

Nachman and His Relationship with Ali Massid Nachman and His Relationship with Ali Massid In the following paper, I would like to focus on Nachman and his relationship with Ali Massid Nachman interested me because he is a cunning character and manages both to make use of Alis generosity and not to fulfill his promise to write a paper on metaphysics. Besides, the way Nachman ends his relationship with Ali is also funny. He literally makes a fool of the prince, telling him that he has written the paper and mailed it, although he has not even begun writing the paper. What is more, Nachmans relationship with Ali cannot be characterized as a normal relationship between two men. The point is that Nachman likes Alis appearance, voice, and even finds the prince perfect, which can make readers feel a spirit of homosexuality in the story. This is how Nachman perceives Ali: He had black hair and black eyes, a finely shaped nose, and a wide sensuous mouth. A Middle Eastern face, aristocratically handsome. This description is intensified in the following lines: Nachman wasnt normally vain, but the stranger was not merely handsome. He was perfect. Comparing himself with a stranger, Nachman thinks that he is a gargoyle. Typically, men do not care about their appearance and compare themselves with other men as women do, which implies that Nachman is a feminized character. Being fascinated by Alis appearance, Nachman agrees to write the paper on metaphysics, regardless of the fact that he cannot write well and have done badly in it. Surely, it can be argued that Nachman agreed because he wanted to earn a thousand dollars, but according to his confession, he has enough money to cover living expenses. What is more, Nachman tells Norbert that he is writing the paper for Ali because he likes him as he is a nice guy. Although Nachman feels manipulated, he agrees to write the paper. At first, he does everything like a brilliant student. He goes to the library, find necessary books, and start reading them through nights. However, when he hears from Norbert that Ali is extremely rich and has a girlfriend an incredible piece and a cheerleader, he almost decides to break his promise, but the look in Alis eyes makes him calm down and sit down to work. Having read enough, he makes an outline of the paper and knows how he is going to write it. Nonetheless, Alis frequent calls and his phony faith in Nachman make the latter feel resented, and this seems to be the main reason for Nachmans deception. The culmination of their relationship occurs when Ali invites Nachman for dinner at a restaurant, where they plan to talk about Henry Bergson. What complicates the matter is that Ali is not interested in Nachmans ideas, but keeps boasting of his girlfriend, richness, and can even let him dance with Sweeny. Ali was flaunting Sweeny, even giving her to Nachman, though not quite as he had given him the superb dinner. Alis generosity had been reduced to an insulting message. Such Alis behavior made Nachman feel miserable and meaningless since the prince taught him how a person can live without knowledge and buy everything for money. That is why Nachman decides to break his promise and not to write the paper Having felt himself inferior to a richer person, he does not want to be bought once more and proves that money does not decide everything in the world. What he does to Ali lets him feel his power, just like he felt it when Sweeny sat down on his sofa. Therefore, Nachmans story shows readers that every human wants to have some kind of power, instead of performing the role of a puppet.

2 Minute Presentation Topics on Modern Architecture

2 Minute Presentation Topics on Modern Architecture 2 Minute Presentation Topics on Modern Architecture If you are tasked with giving a presentation on modern architecture, you have the unique opportunity to introduce a not well known aspect of buildings and their history. While 2 minutes are not that long, it is still long enough to give your classmates an introduction to one aspect of architecture you might find fascinating. If you are in need of 2 minute presentation topics on modern architecture then consider the list of 20 topics below: How Social Housing Architecture Is Changing Urban Redevelopment: Architectural Assessments and Change The Role Played by the Church of England in Maintaining National Architecture Preserving National Heritage: How Modern Architecture Must Remake Historic Buildings Global Cultural Spaces: How Architecture Reflects Identity Sustained Buildings: Combining Nature and Architecture University Architecture and Design: The Search for Modern Perfection The Rich Decoration of Venetian Style Architecture Victorian-Edwardian Styles of Modern Architecture What Changing Architectural Styles Tell about the Civic Pride in Modern Architecture The Political Aesthetic of Foster’s Dome The Americanization of British Urban Architecture Reinventing Civic Design with Modern Architecture Environmentally Friendly Architecture: How Modern Utilities Have Changed Architectural Standards Clean Lines Creating Challenges for Modern Maintenance The Influence of Islam on the Architecture of Turkey: How Changing Rulers Changed the Construction The Influence of Christianity on Architecture: The Incorporation of Religious Artwork on Public Buildings The Geometric Shapes Used in Islamic Construction: How Interior Designs Reflect Internal Beliefs The Decline of Modern Architecture How Architecture Expresses More than Structure: The Historical Lessons Hidden in Each Building The first thing you must note is that nearly all academic writing is opinionated to some degree, meaning that no matter what you are writing, your goal is to present your opinion, often supported with facts. That being said, when writing on this particular topic, your goal is to present enough facts to support your point of view. Once you have a topic, you must start writing out the key points you want to cover. By writing a short draft or outline the same as you would do in an essay, you can review what you have and time your speech before you stand up in front of the class. Editing is important, but you should not rush it. Start at least 24 hours after you produce your first draft. In addition to this you want to make sure that your sentences flow smoothly and all of your thoughts or ideas are properly connected. You want to finally look over everything for spelling or grammar mistakes. Print out a copy too! Reading it out loud gives you the opportunity to catch smaller errors that might have gone otherwise unnoticed. Having the red pen with you allows you to write down immediately what areas need to be fixed so that once you are done, you can go back and make any necessary changes before printing out your final copy. Our professional custom writing company is a good PowerPoint presentation maker  available for students. All you need is to place your order at our website.

Police Technological Advancements Research Paper

Police Technological Advancements - Research Paper Example These innovations provide much comfort and to a great extent security to the average consumer. However, despite the valuable assistance that such developments have provided to us, these techno upgrades have also created opportunities for criminals to flourish even more. Cyber crimes abound and identity theft has risen. Here, thieves do not need to hold you at gun point and steal from you, they just need to â€Å"pretend† they are you and let you take the fall for the expenses they will incur in your behalf (Identity Theft & Credit Fraud). Criminals have also found ingenious ways of going around various technological check points such as surgically implanting heroine on puppies. With the advances in technology comes the improvement in the way criminals think and act thereby necessitating that law enforcers up the ante a little bit so as to be one step ahead or at par with these culprits. Police work is a very dangerous business and these men and women have to contend with the r eality of danger each day. But, unlike in the military, policemen are much more inclined to public service and safety hence the need to take in rather than take out the criminals. This reality puts the everyday cop on the block in a quandary as they have to strictly adhere to the sanctity of human life thereby limiting the use of force unless it is severely necessary whereas they are faced with entities that seem to have no regards whatsoever to these rights (OHCHR Human Rights Standards and Practice for the Police ). Thus, to ensure safety of the arresting officer as well as to respect and enforce human rights and combat the increasing sophistication of offenders, police forces around the world have commissioned technology to aide them in ensuring public safety. Technological Advances in Detection and Weaponry Aerial Sentinel – the MQ-1 Predator Most people would think that police work is about arresting criminals. However, although it is the part that is mostly reported and where they are most exposed to danger, arresting is only a small part of police work. A very important aspect of doing police work is in safekeeping the public. This involves various forms of reconnaissance to track criminals and secure evidence for prosecution. A big boost in doing this police work is the utilization of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV’s) to help enforces track, pinpoint and ultimately apprehend offenders. After a very successful stint in the armed forces, the UAV has also started a career in police work. Very recently, it has been reported that unmanned UAV’s have taken part in the war on drugs in Mexico wherein the US assisted Mexican authorities in dismantling drug cartels by providing valuable information through their Predators (BBC News). Since respect for territorial sovereignty is key in the cooperative efforts, only the Predator has been used since it is the unarmed variant of these UAV’s. However, though without firepower, this machine is armed to the teeth with state of the art reconnaissance systems and is able to provide up to date images anytime and any day (General Atomics Aeronautical). Stun Guns As mentioned, the nature of police work is to take in rather than take out a target. With the rising global concern on human rights, police forces

Supply and Demand :: Economics Econ 101

Supply and Demand Supply and demand is defined as the relationship between the quantity that producers wish to sell at various prices and the quantity of a commodity that consumers wish to buy. In the functioning of an economy, supply and demand plays an important role in the economic decisions in which a company or individual may make. The quantity of a commodity demanded depends on the price of the commodity, the prices of all other commodities, the incomes of the consumers as well as the consumer’s taste. The quantity of a commodity supplied depends on the price obtainable for the commodity as well the price obtainable for substitute goods, the techniques of production, the cost of labor and other factors of production. It is supply and demand that causes a market to reach equilibrium. If buyers wish to purchase more of a commodity than that of which is available at a given price, then the price will to tend to rise. If they wish to purchase less of a commodity than that of which is available, then the price will tend to drop. Consequently, the price will reach equilibrium at which the quantity demanded is just equal to the quantity supplied. The resources needed to supply commodities often tend to be scarce so that there is always competition. The term â€Å"invisible hand† is the natural force that guides the market to this competition for scarce resources. Without the â€Å"invisible hand† theory then there would be no competition for resources thus creating a market where prices would be determined almost free of debate. There would be no market to determine set prices for any type of commodity. Therefore, many companies and individuals would lose out on

Key Learnings from a Microeconomics Class for Mba Students

30. 11. 2012 Key learnings from Micro Economics module It was a very informative session and an eye opener. I was under the impression that economics only deals with fiscal and monetary policies. This was my first acquaintance with micro economics and it opened up a new perspective. I am in a position now to understand many events that happen every day around me. I am able to have a broad idea about how these events may have a direct or indirect impact on me as an individual (professionally as well as personally) and to an organisation.Detailed below are a few (but not all) significant points that were new to me : Law of Demand & Supply : The quantity demanded of a good falls when the price rises and the quantity supplied of a good rises when the price rises. Price of a good adjusts to bring the quantity supplied and demanded into balance. Other determinants of consumers demand include income, price of substitutes, expectations etc. Any change in these factors shifts the demand curve . Equilibrium : A situation where market price is at a level at which supply and demand quantity equals.Equilibrium of supply and demand maximizes the sum of consumer and producer surplus. Surplus : A situation in which supply is greater than demand Consumers’ surplus : Buyers’ willingness to pay for a good minus the amount the buyer actually pays for it. It measures benefit buyers gets by participating in a market. Producers’ surplus : The amount sellers receive for their goods minus their costs of production. It measures benefit sellers get from participating in a market. Dead Weight Loss : The fall in total surplus that results from a market distortion. Marginal Utility :Additional utility derived by consuming additional unit quantity of goods. Competitive markets : Prices in a perfectly competitive market always equal marginal cost of production. To maximise profit firms chooses output quantity such that marginal revenue equals marginal cost. A Monopolistica lly competitive market is characterized by attributes like many firms, differentiated products and free entry. Each firm in a monopolistically competitive market has excess capacity. There is standard deadweight loss of monopoly caused by the mark up of price over marginal cost. The product differentiation inherent in monopolistic competition leads to the use of advertising and brand names. Oligopoly is a market structure in which only a few sellers offer similar or identical products. Above concepts also clarified how Marginal cost, Sunk cost, Average Cost, Variable cost and Fixed cost help in determining sustainability of doing business and how they help in arriving at decisions like â€Å"maximize profit† or â€Å"continue to produce to cover costs†. Concepts of monopolistic and perfect competition along with examples covered in the class were apt for digesting the underlying principles. It also helped to understand how political/governmental interferences balances or imbalances the market forces and thus effecting the price and/or consumers’ and producers’ behaviour. Price Discrimination (PD) : Important concept on types of price discrimination used by various industries and businesses were interesting to know. I am a consumer of discriminated prices since birth however, never realized that I am a victim or beneficiary of the same. How business use it to their advantage. Concepts of types of PD and their application was an eye opener and gave me a new perspective to look at the market competition in a different way.Others : Prisoner’s Dilemma and Rivalry in Consumption, never heard off but fun to understand. How externalities (positive or negative) influence producers. Tragedy of common and enclosure movement were also unknown but not any longer. In conclusion : I have been thru’ above every day of my life but was never able to understand it the way I am able to do it now. Biggest surprise of all to me was that the u nderlying theme of all these is Microeconomics. And, I thought Economics is one field and was unaware of micro and macro.

The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli

One of Sandro Botticelli’s most famous paintings represents a classical myth – the birth of Venus (1485–1486). This painting shows the myth of Venus’ birth. Botticelli based the picture in a text: â€Å"the profane Birth of Venus and the coronation of the sacred Venus. It was written by Ange Poliziano, based on an ode by Hesiod. † (Berger Foundation, 2006) â€Å"The effect, nonetheless, is distinctly pagan, taking as inspiration written descriptions by the 2nd century historian Lucian of masterpieces of Ancient Greece, was made at a time and place when most artworks depicted Roman Catholic themes. It is somewhat surprising that this canvas escaped the flames of Savonarola's bonfires, where a number of Botticelli's other â€Å"pagan† influenced works perished. Botticelli was very close to Lorenzo de Medici. Because of their friendship and Lorenzo's power, this work was spared from Savonarola's fires and the disapproval of the Church. † ( Wikipedia, 2006) The picture can be divided into three parts: At the left, Zephyr and Chloris fly with tangled limbs. Around them, there are falling roses with golden hearts. At the right part, the trees form part of a flowering orange grove, related to the Greek myth of Hesperides’ sacred garden. At the center appears the Nymph, that might be one of the Greek goddesses of the seasons (Spring or Flora) which welcomes her on land; and the shell where it can be seen maybe not Venus’ birth but the moment when she lands at Paphos in Cyprus, having been carried by the shell. Tolstoy’s interpretation of art Leo Tolstoy, besides his well known literature work, has developed his own theory of art, which emphasises the importance of art to human beings through the communication from the artists to the receivers their emotions and feelings. For him art is a mean of communication of feeling rather than ideas. The artist communicates through the use of colour, sound, movement or words, an emotion or feeling that he has previously experienced. Tolstoy denies different conceptions on art, like those which say that is a manifestation of some mysterious idea, or that art is a way to let off the excess of energy stored by men, or just pure pleasure. For Tolstoy art is a mean of union among men, essential to life, fostering the spiritual evolution of humankind. Birth of Venus under Tolstoy’s perspective It can be stated that Botticelli takes from different artists and thinkers the foundations which uses to express his feelings and emotions.During his time, the renaissance, ancient mythology was admired again. Artists and men of science gathered around the princes, and they all lived together. Among these men interest in the past grew and they started to translate Virgil, Homer, Hesiod and Pindar. Thus, it was very feasible that the humanist ideas propagated rapidly. The art in Florence started to growth and the humanist ideas were incorporated into the artists’ work. To interpret art it is important to pay attention to the links â€Å"between motifs in the works in question and other cultural phenomena of the time, including literary and theological documents. † (Matthew, 1997)Boticcelli’s Birth of Venus, painted for Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de Medicis, is a palpable example of what Tolstoy referred in his theory. Without communication between these people it might be impossible to produce this painting. It reflects the ideas that were common among these men. Now, there is the fact of what feelings or emotions Botticelli tried to express. The story of Venus’ birth is a divine message which brought beauty to humanity. It might be understood that the painter tried to represent this myth in a valuable way. The painting communicates Botticelli’s emotions in front of the power of nature’s creative force.Collingwood’s vision of art Collingwood’s vision of art states that â€Å"th e work of art is a purely imaginary object, existing only and truly, in the artist’s mind and that it is an expression of the artist emotion. † (Collingwood, 1938) Therefore, if the work only exists in the artist’s mind, its physical representation is a way to represent it to others. The way that Collingwood sees art could be explained in this order: the artist has feelings which are unconscious, he gets aware of them through emotions and its expressions, and thus he is conscious of the feeling. Then, the way that he liberates from the oppression of these feelings is through his artistic expression. Thus, art is the way that the artist expresses his own emotions for himself. â€Å"Communicating that emotion to others is secondary† ((Collingwood, 1938) as he views artistic creation as, basically, a process of self acknowledgment. The intention is to make it understood the way that the artist who has expressed the emotion felt in having the emotion. Birth of Venus according to Collingwood’s perspective Under Collingwood’s perspective is complex to establish an analysis of Botticelli’s picture.According to his particular view of art, the painter tries to express his emotions in a way to put his mind at ease. Therefore, it is necessary to understand what feelings or emotions were â€Å"perturbing† Botticelli’s mind. He was trying to explore his own emotions, thus the only thing that can be analysed is the secondary communication, the one that is possible thanks to the fact that the artist uses to express himself a language that might be understood by everyone. What emotions were driving the painter? By looking at the picture one may asses that he feels overwhelmed and amazed by nature’s force. Also, besides the beauty of the painting, an uncommon length of Venus’ neck and the unusual angle that her left arm describes aid to attain harmony, enhancing the feeling of a subtle and tender being, as the story says, a gift from heaven. Botticelli painted â€Å"men and women†¦daddened perpetually by the shadow upon them of the great things from which they shrink. † (David, 1980) Conclusion Collingwood’s theory of art opposes to Tolstoy’s. While Tolstoy says that the only reason of art is communication, Collingwood says that art is a purely imaginary object, existing only in the artist’s mind, thus is an expression of the artist emotion. They both are aware of the fact that emotions are remarkably essential in the creation of art, but Collingwood’s account of the emotions is very different from Tolstoy’s. He says that the artist expression is a way of self liberation from the feelings or emotions, while Tolstoy’s says that the artist wants to communicate a feeling that the artist has previously experienced. For Collingwood, creation is in some way self-seeking, while for Tolstoy is an act of communication essential for unders tanding among humanity. Take Time to Wrap Up the School Year in 3 Steps

Take Time to Wrap Up the School Year in 3 Steps By the time any school year winds down to a close, the last thing any teacher wants to think about is the next school year. Unfortunately, the end of the school year is also when a teacher has the most information about how to make the transition into September much smoother. So, how to make the best use of this information? Teachers should try to spend time -a few hours on each of the following categories- at the end of this year because time invested now  could yield positive results in the next school year. #1. Spend Time Cleaning Up and Cleaning Out Before a teacher leaves for the school year, he or she could take a picture of the room (maybe from several angles) and post these pictures on the bulletin board for the custodial staff to see. This will make sure the room is organized and ready for students in the next school year.   Teachers should box supplies and clearly labels them so materials can be located quickly.( NOTE: Painters tape is more easily removed than other kinds of masking tape if furniture is marked.) In cleaning out, teachers and staff should follow the following guidelines: Remove the materials that were not used this year.Go through files and purge what is outdated. Remove  items that are irrelevant Remove saved items that â€Å"might†¦Ã¢â‚¬ be used. Do not keep those unused items inherited from teachers who came before...and do not feel guilty. #2. Spend Time Reflecting on Goals: If the teacher evaluation program (EX: Danielson or Marzano) has a self-reflection requirement, then much of this effort is already done. A teachers self-reflection can help him or her to focus on what areas might need attention in the next school year. If there is no self-reflection, teachers can still review the following questions in order to draft a goal or set of goals for the coming school year: How can I improve on writing this same or a similar goal for next year? What new ways could I use to measure this same goal or a new goal? Can I use different groups to make growth more visible? What could be the next step after meeting this goal? What single factor was most helpful with my goal this past year? What single factor caused problems with meeting my goal this past year? How can I improve my use of time in meeting a future goal? #3. Spend Time on Preparing Special Events Teachers can do a little pre-planning during the summer to alleviate the stress of planning special events (field trips or guest visits-in person or virtually) for students during the school year. Contacting locations or guest speakers in advance of the school year will help provide the school office personnel the time to plan for logistical support (transportation, permission slips, substitutes, video chats) well in advance, especially when the school calendar is being created. Special events are what students remember about the school year, and a little planning in advance can make the effort for all stakeholders worthwhile. In spending a few hours at the end of the school year on each of the three suggestions above, teachers can leverage their experiences of this past school year in order to make positive steps towards making the next school year experience even better.

Candida Albicans Microbe Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Candida Albicans Microbe - Essay Example In smears of exudates, Candida appears as a gram-positive, oval budding yeast, 2-3 x 4-6 micrometer, gram-positive, elongated budding cells in chains, or true hyphae. On Sabouraud’s agar incubated at room temperature, soft, cream-colored colonies with a yeasty odor develop. The surface growth consists of oval budding cells. The submerged growth consists of pseudo mycelium. This is composed of pseudohyphae that form blastoconidia at the nodes and sometimes chlamydoconidia terminally. Among the principal predisposing factors to Candida infection are the following: diabetes mellitus, general debility, immunodeficiency, indwelling urinary or intravenous catheters, intravenous opioid abuse, administration of antimicrobials, and corticosteroids. Infection of the mouth (thrush) occurs mainly in infants and in AIDS patients on the Buccal mucous membranes and appears as white adherent patches consisting largely of pseudo mycelium and desquamated epithelium, with the only minimal erosion of the membrane. The growth of Candida in the mouth is enhanced by corticosteroids, antibiotics, high levels of glucose, and immunodeficiency (Drew e.a. 2004, p. 235). Vulvovaginitis resembles thrush but produces irritation, intense itching, and discharge. Loss of an acid pH in the vagina predisposes to candidal vulvovaginitis. Acid pH is normally maintained by the bacterial flora in the vagina. Diabetes, pregnancy, progesterone, and antibiotic therapy predispose to disease (Ponikau e.a., 2005, p. 128). Infection of the skin occurs principally in moist, warm parts of the body, such as the axilla, intergluteal folds, groin, or inframammary folds; it is most common in obese and diabetic individuals. The infected areas become red and weeping and may develop vesicles.
